The Architect: Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Charles Rennie Mackintosh was born in Glasgow in 1868. His His distinctive personal style characterises the age immediately preceding the Modern Movement. His name is mainly connected with the plan for the Glasgow School of Art.

He was the animator and most authoritative exponent of the group known as the ' Glasgow School ' and he distinguished himself because he recovered the most authentic values of the Scottish idiom and of neo-Gothic taste. The group, also named ' the Spook School', became known throughout Europe and America.

Besides the School of Art the most interesting works are Queens Cross Church (1899) The Hill House in Helensburgh (1902), Windy Hill in Kilmalcolm (1900) and the Miss Cranston's Willow Tea-rooms in Glasgow.
